Unilever and Mars were among the first household names in the food and drink industry to announce plans for a 100% shift to renewable energy.
But few of them have a specific deadline, while some still heavily rely on biomass, which is controversial, because of potential competition with food crops.

Biogas generation specialist ENER-G has published a free guide to help British farmers gain financial benefits from turning farm waste into energy via anaerobic digestion.
‘The Essential Farmers’ Guide to the Financial Benefits of Waste Energy’ details the financial incentives on offer. These include the government’s Feed in Tariff (FiT) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which can provide an attractive 20-year income for renewable energy generation. ENER-G has turned up the heat on the anaerobic digestion market by launching a new sub 200kwth CHP unit that maximises financial returns on both the highest rate Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Feed in Tariffs (FIT).
This will help to stem the shortfall from FIT digression following the 20% reduction in FIT rates last year and ongoing tariff reductions. ENER-G says that its new biogas CHP technology makes small scale anaerobic digestion viable for a wider customer base, particularly smaller farms and dairies, as well as industrial processors.
